Rachel Felkner Devault died at the home of her son, Charles H. Devault, in Madison county, Iowa, February 28, 1902, after an illness of eight days, from an attack of pneumonia. She was born near Columbus, Ohio, October 10, 1815. Her father died when she was quite young.

In the year 1832 her mother moved with her family to Kosciusko county, Indiana, settling near the town of Milford. In 1836 she married Charles Devault.

Charles Devault was born near Chillicothe, Ohio, August 22, 1813. In the year 1825, his father died.

In the year 1833 the widowed mother, with the family, moved to Kosciusko county, Indiana, settling near Milford. In the spring of 1841 this couple, with their two little boys, in a wagon drawn by oxen, moved from Milford, Indiana, to Johnson county, Iowa, settling some four miles west of Solon, where they lived thirty-six years and some months on the same farm. In 1878 they moved to Ely, Linn county, Iowa.

There on May 22, 1883, the father died, aged sixty-nine years, nine months and was buried in the Solon cemetery.

He had faith in Christ, the Savior. To this union there was born six sons: H. F., of Madison county, Iowa; J. Z., of St. Paul, Minnesota; A. J. died in the army of fever in 1863 and is buried in the Nation cemetery at Vicksburg, Miss.; G. W. of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; C. H. and J. J. of Madison county, Iowa.

In 1892 she moved to Madison county, Iowa, where she made her home until her death.

She was eighty-six years, four months, and twenty-one days old. She had been in feeble health during the last year of her life. Her death was not unexpected.

She had strong faith in Christ, and was a member of the Lutheran Church, and a portion of the last hours of her life she spent in prayer.

She passed away without a struggle, as if going to sleep. The Reverend Mr. Finney made a few remarks and offered prayer before starting with the corpse, for the train. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Whittington, in Solon, the Reverend S. D. Bartle spoke briefly, and offered prayer. Also at the grave, Rev. Bartle conducted a brief religious service. She was laid by the side of her husband in the Solon cemetery, Johnson county, Iowa. It is hard to part with kind parents.

The funeral was preached by Rev. W. W. Williams at Penn Center M. E. Church, April 13th at 11 a.m. to a large and sympathetic audience.
