JOHN RALSTON

John Ralston was born August 15, 1830 and died September 5, 1915. His age therefore exceeded by a few days four score and five years.

His native state was Virginia. In early life he removed to Ohio. In 1857 he went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he taught school for some time. In 1850 he removed to Madison county. He came to Albia in 1835.

He enlisted as a soldier in the civil war in September, 1864, and remained in the service until the close of the war.

He was married to Miss Harriet Bell, November 22, 1861. Mrs. Ralston died September 5, 1890. Two daughters were born to this union: the late Mrs. Emma Cresswell, Mineola, Kansas, and Mrs. Mary Ramsay of Albia.

In early life Mr. Ralston identified himself with the Associate Presbyterian church. He was elected an elder of the organization of the church at Winterset, Iowa. He also served in this office for several years in the Albia church, until by reason of infirmities, at his own request, he was relieved from active service.

Mr. Ralston lived a quiet, peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. He was a man of positive and strong convictions, and bold in the profession of truth as he believed it, yet he was charitable toward those who were of different views from himself. He was intensely interested in affairs civil and ecclesiastical. He delighted to converse on these matters. His deep interest in the Bible, his attachment to scriptural principles and worship, his upright life, give confidence to the belief that he had died the death of the righteous, in which there is glorious hope.

Transcriber's note: Transcribed as published, his move to Madison County was likely 1860 rather than "1850". They moved to Albia sometime between 1885 and 1895 rather than "1835".
