Death of Mrs. Eliza Kalb

After months of suffering on her part and faithful anxious care from her family, Mrs. Kalb passed away here last Sunday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anthony Cochrane, being in her 72nd year.

Miss Eliza J. Nevitt was born July 16, 1849, at Kenton, Hardin County, Ohio and was united in marriage to M. Kalb, Feb. 3, 1867 in Olney, Richland County, Illinois. To this union were born four daughters, Ida May, Viola, Kittie and Emma C.

Mr. and Mrs. Kalb moved to Iowa in 1882, and after 9 years in the state they moved to Stuart. Mrs. Kalb has lived in Stuart and vicinity for the past 30 years. Since the death of her husband she has made her home with her daughters, Mrs. Ida Houseworth, who has been dead for several years, Mrs. Kittie Cochrane, of Stuart and Mrs. Emma Cross of Des Moines.

Soon after they took up residence in Stuart Mrs. Kalb became a member of the Church of Christ and obeyed her Lord in Christian Baptism April 10, 1897, and has been a faithful follower of Him whom she vowed to serve ever since. She has been a living epistle, read, known and loved by all who knew her.

She had been ailing for the past six years, but nothing serious was sensed until she took to her bed on Sept. 7, 1920, and from which she never arose, but passed on to the realm beyond to be with Him whom she had served so faithfully, at 3:15 o’clock p.m. on her Lord’s day, Feb. 6, 1921. The acute pain she had suffered was lessened by her unconsciousness the last few hours of her life, and when the summons came she went to meet her Lord with a smile upon her lips.

Her influence has been felt by many. Outside of being a mother to her daugher’s boy, Hayden Houseworth, she bore the distinction of being called that name by many. “She has been a mother and confidante to me,” are their words of appreciation. She leaves behind a host of sorrowing friends who shall greatly miss her sweet touch, but have no regrets, for she is now at rest with Him and has gone to the Mansions which she dreamed about, God bless us and be merciful to us as we tarry here for our summons. We pray our lives may be as hers and so we join with the poet Whittier:---
“The dear Lord’s best interpreters
Are humble human souls;
The gospel of a life like hers
Is more than books or scrolls.”

During her long illness at the home of Mrs. Cochrane, the other daughter Mrs. Cross was with her a part of each week, and did her part in the care of her mother. The last week an old friend Miss Helen Ruge assisted them.

Mrs. Kalb was a member of a Rebekah Lodge in Des Moines.

She was a genial, kindly woman, who scattered good deeds where she went and always had a smile and a pleasant word for everybody.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Fairly, who spoke from a text of her own selection, “In My Father’s house are many mansions,” A quartette, composed of Messrs Dixon and Zink, Miss Hazel Rogers and Mrs. Levi Jones sang “Go bury thy sorrow,” “Asleep in Jesus” and “The home of the Soul” being accompanied by Mrs. Walter Haynes. The burial was at Penn Center beside her husband and two daughters. The pallbearers were Messrs W. J. Taylor, Allen Jones, Thos. Low, Sam’l Low, H. M. Miller and R. Tassell.

Relatives from out of town were: Mrs. S. A. Roark, a sister; Mrs. S. E. Smith, a niece; Edgar Roark, a nephew, Valley Junction; B. M. Roark, Greenfield; Frank Nevitt (Brother) and wife, Guthrie Center; Mrs. Rose Tenney, Mrs. C. W. McCurdy, Frank Durnell and wife, Des Moines; Bert Stigers and wife, Valley Junction and Miss Helen Ruge, Minot, N.D.
