Joyce Daniels, the daughter of Henry H. Tomes and Bina (Booth) Tomes, was born on June 13, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa. She passed from this life on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at the age of 79.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 30, from 10-11 a.m. at St. Charles Parish Church, with funeral services following visitation at 11 a.m. Memorials may be given to the family in her name.
She grew up and lived most of her life in the St. Charles area and graduated from St. Charles High School. Joyce was united in marriage to Jack Daniels on April 7, 1957, and they were blessed with five children, Cynthia, Sharon, Vicki, Jack and Melissa.
Joyce had several jobs throughout the years including Bankers Life, Farm Bureau, Gates Cafe, Sanders Drug, Cumming Orchard and Guaranteed Micrographics. She was a loving, caring housewife and her family, dog Tippy, and teasing her sons-in-law was her main joy. She enjoyed attending functions for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had many hobbies including crafts, sewing and crocheting, fishing, camping with family, friends and the Rolling Wheels Camping Club, traveling, reading, watching movies and baking. She especially enjoyed visiting her daughter’s miniature animals and spending time outdoors caring for her flower gardens. Watching golf, baseball and especially girls’ basketball was a joy, but her greatest hobby that overshadowed all was shopping, shopping and more shopping. Whether she made a purchase or not, she always looked through every isle of the store. Family could always check with her before making a purchase because she knew which store had the best value for your buck.
For the holidays, Joyce loved animated decorations and her front door always reflected the current season. But Christmas was always a magical time of year. Joyce enjoyed the stories Jack would tell of his many years as Santa Claus and 15 years ago, she decided to join him as Mrs. Claus. They traveled together and touched the hearts of children, young and old alike.
Joyce was a member of the St. Charles Parish Church and was an active member of the St. Charles Parish Women’s Organization. In 2014, Jack and Joyce were honored as the King and Queen of the St. Charles Old Settlers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Teresa Burke and Sadie Foster; and brother, Henry Lee Tomes.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jack Daniels of St. Charles; four daughters, Cynthia (Kent) Strawn of Norwalk, Sharon (Mike) Ashby of Winterset, Vicki Howell of Ankeny and Melissa (Don) Walker of Peru; a son, Jack (Diane) Daniels of St. Charles; 17 grandchildren: Elizabeth (Brian) Wilson, John (Jessi) Strawn, Eric Ashby, Mike (Alisa) Ashby Jr., Jennifer Shilhanek, Linda (Matt) Reyna-Willms, Dan (Kathryn) Ashby, Heather (Bill) Hendrickson, Ryan (Megan) Gavin, Charity (John) Shaver, Nicki Howell, Kyle Howell, Jack Daniels, Charles Daniels, Joshua Daniels, Kody Walker and Joey Walker; 34 great-grandchildren: Connor, Zachary, Chase, Zoey, Madyson, Alyson, Kaitlyn, Alivia (Dalton), Abegail, Robert (Maya), Michael Noel, Lacy, Reyna, McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, Ian, Lillian, Elizabeth, Annabelle, Seraphina, Lola, Emmeline, Trenton, Spencer, Noah, Ryder, Bane, Grayson, Layla, Savannah, Harmony, Charlie and Sylas; five great-great-grandchildren: Zayden, Fallyn, Asher, Jayden and Judah.
