OBITUARY

John James McKray, eldest son of James and Emma Cartwright McKray was born at Hancock, Iowa, April 10th, 1879 and passed from this life, at the age of 87 years.

When he was seven years of age his parents went back to the Iowa City community where they had formerly lived, and here he grew to manhood finishing school at the Iowa City Academy; later farming with his father. He became a member of the IOOF Lodge at the age of twenty one years and always strictly lived its teaching. At the time of his passing he was a 66 year member. His standards of life were Helpfulness, Humility, and Honesty; believing as the poet expressed it, “Honest toil is holy service, Faithful work is praise and prayer.”

He was united in marriage to Netta M. Downard March 29th, 1906 at Waterville, Kansas and with the exception of five years spent at Tolstoy, South Dakota; they lived in the Earlham community where they farmed. Ill heath caused him to quit the farm and they came to Dexter to live in 1948.
