Esther Ritter, formerly of Macksburg passed away Saturday. Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon in Afton and burial in the Moon cemetery.

AFTON – Mrs, Esther Alice Ritter, 67, of Afton, died at the Greater Community hospital at Creston at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. She had been a patient at the Cochrane nursing home in Creston for 3 ½ years before she entered the hospital Friday.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Methodist church in Afton. Rev. William Tomlinson will officiate. Burial will be in the Moon cemetery, south of Macksburg. Her body will lie in state at the church from 12:30 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the services. Her family will be at the Stroud funeral home at Afton from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight.
Her family said a memorial fund is being established for the Afton and Dodge Center Methodist churches.
Esther Alice Lewellen was born near Redfield, in Dallas county, April 11, 1898. She was the daughter of Sherman S. and Alice Crisman Lewellen. She was married to Ernest J. Ritter on Jan. 5, 1922.
Since her marriage she had lived in the Dodge Center community until moving to Afton in 1952. She taught in the Macksburg schools and in rural schools in northeastern Union county before and after her marriage.
Mrs. Ritter served as town clerk in Afton from 1954 until 1959.
She was a member of the Afton Methodist church and the Wesleyan Service Guild, the Afton V.F.W. Auxiliary, Ivy Rebekah lodge No. 38, at Afton for 46 years.
Mrs. Ritter is survived by her husband, Ernest; two sons, Earl Ritter of Bloomfield and Edwin Ritter of Creston; a brother, Fred Lewellen of Adair; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one child, a brother and a sister.
