Word was received Saturday morning that Chrystal Thurman, an aged citizen of Osceola, but formerly of this community, died at his home Saturday morning. The funeral will be held this Monday afternoon at Barney and burial in the Barney cemetery. Mr. Thurman was 87, and was a violin maker and old time fiddler. He leaves two daughters and two sons.

Thursday, July 15, 1937Christol Thurman, 85, well known and highly respected Osceola citizen, passed away at his home on North Main street Saturday, July 10. He had been a resident of this city since 1924 and prior to that time was for many years a citizen of Lorimor.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church at Barney, Iowa, Monday afternoon, July 12 at 2:30 o’clock and interment in the Barney cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. F. C. McCallon of this city.
Christol D. W., oldest son of Lydia and Felix Thurman, was born in Stark county, Illinois on October 13, 1849, where he lived with his parents until he grew to manhood.
In the year 1870 he was united in marriage to Amanda Simmerman. To this union five children were born, namely: Mrs. S. J. Warren of Winterset, Iowa; Allen Thurman of Wyoming; Kerry Thurman of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Mrs. Will Durfey of Marshalltown, Iowa and Mrs. Ida Gibbons who preceded him in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Thurman came to Iowa in 1872 where they settled on a farm near Barney and continued to live in this community until 1905 when they moved to Lorimor, where they lived, when death claimed his companion in 1911.
Mr. Thurman services as mayor of Lorimor for a number of years and became a member of the Masonic lodge while in Lorimor.
On March 2, 1924, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Katie Standish of Osceola, Iowa. At that time he moved to Osceola where he lived until July 10, 1937 when he peacefully passed away.
He was an enthusiastic lover of music and during his declining years he spent many a happy day building his loved violins.
During his entire life he was an admirer of Nature and the out-of-doors where he spent much time hunting and fishing. He enjoyed most, after the years had dimmed his eye, showing his friends the many mounted specimens from his hunt.
He was loved and respected by all who knew him and was a kind father and loving husband.
