Retired official dies here at 67

Robert E. Schoenenberger, former regional commissioner for the U.S. Immigration Service, died Tuesday. He was 67 and lived at 8401 Freestone Ave.

A native of Winterset, Iowa, Mr. Schoenenberger began his career as a border patrolman for the Immigration Service in El Paso, Texas, in 1941. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marine as a warrant officer radio operator.

After the war, Mr. Schoenenberger continued his work as a border patrolman in Detroit and Daytona, Fla., before being sent to Washington in 1955.

Shortly after arriving in Washington, Mr. Schoenenberger led a team of immigration officers that arrested Soviet master spy Rudolph Abel.

In 1959, Mr. Schoenenberger arrived in Richmond and began work as a deputy regional commissioner. He was promoted to regional commissioner in 1968 and served until his retirement in 1977.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Ninety and Nine Breakfast Cub and the Retired Federal Employees Association. Mr. Schoenenberger was also a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Caroline J. Schoenenberger of Richmond; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Nemil and Miss Maureen Schoenenberger, both of Richmond; a son, Michael R. Schoenenberger of Williamsburg; and a brother, Charles Schoenenberger of Clear Lake Highlands, Calif.

A Christian wake will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Third and Marshall streets.

A funeral mass will be said at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Westhampton Memorial Park.
