Harold W. Johnson, Des Moines

Harold Wayne Johnson was born in Madison County, Iowa on January 27, 1920 and died on November 2, 2016. The oldest of three children born to Byron and Bessie (Bowlsby) Johnson, Harold graduated from Winterset High School in 1937. In 1944 he married Mary Louise Fidler and together they raised four children, Aletha (Bob) Speakar, Lorene (Lyle) Johnson, Wayne (Helen), and Warren (Belinda).

A "farmboy" at heart, Harold worked variously as farmer, animal husbandry technician, factory worker and school custodian. He was active in the Altoona Methodist Church, Saydel CSD Retired Employees Club and Tornado Twirlers and Do-Si Dancers Square Dance Clubs. Harold and Mary Lou wintered in Texas for many years where he served as activities director for the Big Valley RV Park and sang in the Park Chorus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister and his wife of 67 years. He is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9 at Iles Grandview Park Chapel. Services will be 10:30 a.m. November 10 at Grandview Park Chapel followed by burial at the Oralabor Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family for a memorial fund to be established in Harold's name.
