Caroline Goshorn, Denver, Colorado

Caroline Grace Goshorn, former resident of Winterset, died peacefully of natural causes on July 31, 2016, in Golden, Colo. She was 97.

Mrs. Goshorn was born in Columbia, Mo., in 1918, the third of six children. Her parents were Professor Henry Krusekopf, a member of the science faculty at the University of Missouri, and Nancy (Smith) Krusekopf, a published author. She attended Hickman High School in Columbia, receiving honors for her work as editor of the school yearbook in her senior year. She continued her studies at the University of Missouri, graduating with a BS degree in Education in 1940.

The young Caroline Krusekopf decided to pursue a teaching career and was hired as an instructor in the Winterset Independent School District, where she taught kindergarten from 1940 to 1942. While teaching at Winterset, Caroline met her future husband, Arthur Goshorn Jr., son of well-known Winterset News editor Arthur Goshorn Sr. The two were married in August 1942 in Savannah, Ga., and spent the World War II years traveling from state to state as dictated by the assignments given to Art as a member of the U.S. Air Force.

After the war, Art and Caroline settled in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Caroline gave up her teaching career and devoted herself to raising six children while still finding time to engage in her personal interests of painting, writing poetry and playing the organ. In 1967, the family moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., a place she would call home for the next 35 years. Her husband Art died in January 1976.

At age 85, Caroline relocated to Denver, Colo. She spent her final years enjoying a quiet life with her hobbies and beloved corgi dogs. She is survived by three daughters, Carol, Carla Tarr and Gayla; three sons, Keith, Kent and Kert; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her brother Henry Krusekopf, now the sole surviving sibling.

Services will be held at Winterset Cemetery on a date to be named later.
