St. Charles Youth Drowned in Spirit Lake Sunday

Robert Smith, 16-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Smith of St. Charles was drowned in Spirit Lake Sunday in a tragic boating accident.

The youth was riding in a 16 foot motor boat on Spirit Lake with four other young people from St. Charles. About 300 yards from the state campgrounds there the boat capsized in a turn against the high waves that were running on the lake at that time.

Two girls in the boat were wearing life jackets and boat cushions were available for the three boys, but for some reason young Smith was unable to use his cushion. He went down in 30 feet of water.

The four other occupants were saved by their life jackets and boat cushions. They were Ronnie Sparks, 23, Carroll Hayden, 25, Kaye Martin, 20, and Mary Ann Johnson, 20, all of St. Charles.

The body of the boy was not recovered until Monday.

Funeral services for the drowning victim were to be held this Wednesday from the St. Charles Methodist church with burial in the St. Charles cemetery.
