Mary Susan Haas was born near Bellview, Ohio, Sept.11, 1834, and died at her old home in Jackson township, March 3d, aged 78 years, 5 months and 20 days.
She was married to Geo. Smull, Dec. 25, 1853 in Clayton county, Iowa. To this union was born seven children, three girls and one boy dying in infancy, one son, John died Jan. 30, 1912, leaving two sons, Jerome Smull of Washington, and Charles Smull of this place. Her husband died July 5, 1894.
She remained his widow until Sept. 21, 1898, when she was united in marriage to Thornton Hoff, and lived in St. Charles until his death, on April 7, 1912. She has lived with her son, Charles since the death of her husband on the old farm, where she had lived and raised her family. Two sisters and two sons survive her.
The funeral was held in the M. E. church of which she was a member, on last Wednesday, conducted by Rev. W. W. Williams, who took for his text “For to me to Live is Christ and to die is gain.” Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to the relatives in their bereavement.
