Obituary of Karen Zeutenhorst

Karen Diane (Simon) Zeutenhorst was born November 18, 1962, the daughter of A. Scott Simon and LaVonne Evelyn (Beier) Simon in Des Moines, IA. She passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at her home after a battle with cancer.

The family moved to Winterset when Karen was just a year old and she spent her childhood years and the rest of her life there. In High School, she was active in the Band, Choir, and played Softball. She also played the piano and was a cadet teacher. Her friends enjoyed coming to the Covered Bridge Festival to listen to her sing. Karen’s love for singing took her to the Bill Riley Stage at the Iowa State Fair where she earned the honor of competing in the talent show. Throughout high school she also worked at Biz-Mart and was a lifeguard at the Winterset pool. After high school, she attended Central College in Pella. When she left college, she worked for several years in the Accounting Department of Homemaker’s Furniture Store in Des Moines. For the last 18 years, she enjoyed working as an IT Manager for the Judicial Branch of the State of Iowa.

She married Randy Zeutenhorst on November 5, 1988 and helped him raise his two sons, Bryan and Jared. During the summer, Karen spent many weekends with her family on their pontoon boat at Lake Red Rock. The past two years they have spent weekends riding their Can-Am Spider, accomplishing their goal of riding in all 99 Iowa Counties. Karen was devoted to her grandchildren. She loved watching their grandson, Dawson’s hockey and football games and she especially enjoyed her granddaughter’s birthdays when they spent the day eating out and having a “mani-pedis”. Her grandkids called her the ”Fun Grandma.”

She joined First United Methodist Church in Winterset as a teenager and sang in the children’s and youth choirs. She was a member of the Chancel Choir and sang in the Praise Band as an adult. Karen was also a long time member of the Winterset American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband, Randy; stepsons Bryan (Angela) Zeutenhorst and their children, Dawson, Macey, Cadence, and Presley, and Jared (Jenny) Zeutenhorst and her grand puppy Winston; brothers, Tim Simon and Marc (Renee) Simon; her mother LaVonne; and many aunts, uncles, cousins.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 12, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Erling M. Schultz officiating. Family will greet friends 1 hour prior to service time on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to her family for a future designation. Online condolences may be left at www.mccalleyfuneralhome.com .
