JOAN GULLING, Tennessee

Joan Gulling, 83, of Seymour, Tenn., died Sunday, June 19, 2016, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s dementia.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at Sandy Springs Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tenn., In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Tennessee (alztennessee.org) or to Bob Jones University Alumni Association (bjualumni.com).

Joan Eloise Wilkinson Gulling, was born May 19, 1933, to Orrell Wilkinson Eyerly (Cooper) and Samuel O. Eyerly in Winterset. After her parents’ divorce Jo was reared by her maternal grandparents, Wesley and Bertha Larrison Wilkinson. Jo graduated from Winterset High School in 1951 where she was a majorette and active in theatre and 4-H. She earned a BS in Home Economics from Bob Jones University in 1955 and an MS in Home Economics from University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1961. Jo taught high school in Mitchellville, Iowa, and Greeneville, SC. In 1956, she married R. Dean Gulling, with whom she celebrated 56 years of marriage before his death in 2013. While raising her family in Chattanooga, Tenn., she maintained her professional life as a substitute teacher for Hamilton County schools, a member and officer of Tennessee Home Economists in Homemaking, and a regional representative with American Intercultural Student Exchange. Jo was an active member of East Ridge Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga and Sandy Springs Presbyterian Church in Maryville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; and half-brother, Larry Eyerly.

She is survived by daughters, Dana (Andrew) Mead of Lancaster, Pa., Kendra (Sam) Ray of Cumming, Ga., and Tara (Brian) Havely of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and half-sisters, Judith Cooper Nurse of California and Sandra Eyerly Miller of Iowa.
