Ron Driskill

Ron Driskill, 69, of 1423rd Lane of Madrid, Iowa passed away at the Boone County Hospital in Boone, Iowa on Tuesday evening, May 24, 2016.

He was born on December 10, 1946 in Leon, Iowa to Perry and Marjorie (Brady) Driskill.

On July 8, 1967, he married Carla Payton in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ron was a 1965 graduate of Des Moines Technical High School in Des Moines. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1966, was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and served as a Crew Chief aboard a KC135 before being honorably discharged in 1970.

Following his discharge, he was employed at Des Moines Flying Service and was Cor Pac Service Administrator for the Midwest region. In 1986, he was awarded Man of the Year by Piper Aircraft for his expertise in aircraft maintenance and service. He later worked for Elliott Beechcraft in Omaha, Nebraska and for over 24 years served as an inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement. He obtained his Master Parachute Riggers certification.

Ron enjoyed working in his yard, planting flowers and trees, and planting his annual vegetable garden. He enjoyed feeding all of the birds and going through his bird book to identify all the different types in his backyard. He loved nature and watching all the deer, squirrels, foxes, and chipmunks. Ron enjoyed hunting, fishing, and motorcycle riding. He was very handy with all kinds of tools and an expert woodworker. He liked to use his skills to help others including volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. Ron was also an avid airplane pilot in addition to building and flying remote control airplanes.

He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone; the VFW and American Legion in Winterset, Iowa; the Madison and Boone County Gun Club; the Patriot Guard Riders of Iowa; and the Republican Central Committee in both Boone and Madison County.

His parents and one son, Matthew in 2004, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife Carla of Madrid; 2 daughters, Dana Heldenbrand and husband Chuck of Madrid, Iowa and Jenny Larson and husband Steve of Asheville, North Carolina; a granddaughter Savannah Heldenbrand; a brother Jonnie Driskill, his wife Rosalee and their family of Truro, Iowa; Bob, Tabitha, Jared, Owyn, Piper, and Sam Payton; his Schnauzer shadows, Harley and Molly, who followed him everywhere; and many other loved family members.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday morning, May 31st from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church at 309 South Greene Street in Boone, Iowa.

The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Church with Pastor Dan Solomon officiating. A light luncheon will be served immediately following the funeral service.

Interment with military honors and presentation of the flag conducted by the American Legion Green-Rogers Post #184 and VFW Post #8142 of Winterset, Iowa will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Gordon Cemetery in Winterset, Iowa.

In memory of Ron, memorials may be directed to the “Augustana Lutheran Church - HVAC Fund” in lieu of flowers.
