Monday, April 5, 1999Walter Edward McCorkle, 86, of Independence, Iowa, died on April 1, 1999, at East Towne Care Center following a lingering illness.
Walter was born on November 29, 1912, in Winterset, Iowa, the son of George and Edith (Benjamin) McCorkle. He graduated from the Earlham, Iowa, High School in 1931. He spent from 1932 to 1936 in the United States Navy. On August 1, 1940, he was married to Myrtle Ratcliff at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle, daughters, Nancy Birdwell of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Virginia and her husband, Fred, Staton of Independence, grandchildren, Tom Staton and his wife, Kim, and great granddaughter, Paige, of Urbandale, Steve Birdwell and his wife, Janette, and great granddaughter Abigail of Altoona, Stephanie (Staton) Decker and her husband, Pat, of Cedar Rapids, Gary Birdwell and his wife, Katie, of Urbandale, and Ken Staton of Des Moines. Walter is also survived by one sister, Jeanette Doyle of Omaha, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gladys Loschen and Lois Gieber.
Walter was a life time farmer. The family lived in Jones, Delaware, and Buchanan Counties. Following retirement in 1977, Walter and Myrtle have made their home in Independence.
