April 1948Nettie Victoria Hiatt, daughter of Thomas and Eliza Hiatt, was born July 27, 1881, near Truro, Iowa. She passed away at the home of her son, Eldon Allen, in Indianola on April 20, 1948.
In 1894 she came with her family to the Ackworth community where most of the family have lived until now. She was the eldest of five daughters. Of Thomas and Eliza’s family, four have passed into the Great Beyond. They are the father, two daughters, Florence and Alice, and now Nettie. The mother and two sisters, Laura Hiatt Smith, of Indianola and Inez Hiatt Smith of Ackworth remain among us.
Nettie Hiatt attended the country schools until she completed the elementary grades. She then enrolled in Ackworth Academy, graduating in 1898. Her life was further enriched and stimulated by the good training in a Christian home and in Ackworth Friends Meeting. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends and seemed to never recall any time or way of life that did not include God and the church.
For a time Nettie Hiatt taught school in the rural schools. She served most of her adult life as a Sunday School teacher of young children. For many years she was clerk of Ackworth Monthly Meeting.
On January 15, 1903 Nettie Hiatt and Jobe Harmon Allen were married. With the exception of three years in Western Nebraska and two years in Milo, they have lived in or near Ackworth.
To them were born four children. Eldon and Ivan of Indianola, Marie Allen Eggers of Des Moines and Bernard of Osceola, of whom all were with her at the time of her passing. There are seven grandchildren: Barbara Allen Coppock; Betty and Patricia Allen; Beverly Allen Labertew, Jack Allen; Bernard Allen Jr. and Lee Allen; and one great grandchild, Lance Allen Coppock. She leaves three daughter-in laws and one son-in-law. Also three nephews and one niece, one nephew having preceded her in death in 1930, and many other relatives and friends, both here and in North Carolina, where they spent the past winter.
She enjoyed having the grandchildren and nieces and nephews in her home and they spent many happy days there.
She was taken ill while on vacation in North Carolina. After three weeks in the hospital, she was cared for in the home of Jobe Allen’s foster brother, Colbert Allen and family. On March 20 she returned to Iowa and spent her remaining days at the homes of her sons, Bernard and Eldon.
Funeral services were held at the Ackworth Friends church on Thursday, April 22, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Everett Davis of Des Moines, former pastor of the church. He was assisted by the Rev. Hugh Barrett, present pastor. Music was furnished by Ruth Ellen Houghtaling and Mary Ellen Nichols. Pall bearers were: Laurel, Wyman and Myron Smith, Robert Haldeman and Alvin Ford, nephews and Willard Coppock, grandson-in-law.
Interment was in Ackworth Cemetery.
