Obituary

Catherine A. White was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, April 5, 1840, and died in Vinton, Iowa, Feb. 28, 1899. In 1863 she was married to Henry Crawford, who was at that time in the service of his country in Co. D, 78 Ohio volunteer infantry. The young soldier boy came home on a furlough to claim his bride. She then accompanied her parents to Iowa and remained with them in Madison County until her husband received his discharge, January 12, 1865. Joyfully the young husband hastened to Madison County and a happy home was established.

Four children were born to them, three sons and one daughter, who together with her aged father and an adopted daughter, little Flossie, are left to mourn the loss of an affectionate wife and loving mother.

About 15 years ago the family moved to Vinton and have since resided in our midst.

Very early in life she gave her heart to God and united with the M. E. church and during many years of suffering manifested a patient Christian spirit.

For six months she was confined to her bed. Her suffering was intense but she bore it all without a murmur. Her Christ like patience, firm faith and childlike trust was an uplift to all who entered her sick chamber. It seemed like a hallowed spot and her children, who were all permitted to be with and minister to her, will always regard the experience of those six months is the most sacred of their lives. Not only did her example prove a blessing to her immediate family, but all who went out from her presence bore with them a longing for more of the spirit of Christ.

One day a member of the family who had been reading the book, "In His Steps" was telling her the story. After they had finished she said, "that is just what I have thought so often myself since I have been lying here I am trying to suffer as Jesus would".
