Rodger Howard Briney, son of Howard and Hazel (Shipton) Briney, was born February 6, 1935, on the family farm in Marshall County. Rodger attended Gladbrook High School up to his junior year and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1953. He worked at Solar Aircraft and then as a welder for Truckenbrod Machine Shop after high school before he started farming with his family. Rodger farmed and raised livestock in Madison County for the rest of his working career. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard rising to the rank of Master Sergeant.

Rodger was united in marriage with Lillie Viola Young on August 21, 1955, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Creston. The couple reared three children and were married for greater than forty years. Viola passed away in 2003. Rodger was a member of the American Legion Post #184, the Hebron Methodist Church, the MYF, the Winterset Co-Op Board of Directors, and the Stanzel Stinkers Softball Team. He had a passion for politics, sports, and restoring antique tractors. Rodger loved nothing more than attending his children’s and grandchildren’s various activities. Rodger met Jean Bauer at a dance, and the two became inseparable. They treasured each other’s companionship, and later became engaged. Above all else, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and friends. He particularly loved spoiling his dog, Whitney (Noodlehead).

Rodger is survived by his fiancé, Jean Bauer of Orient, children: Randy Briney of Winterset, Sherri Briney of Winterset, Craig Briney of Winterset; 12 grandchildren: Justin, Trenton, Derrick, Erin, Alissa, Amanda, Andria, Cory, Maddie, Emily, Luke, and Gracie; 10 great grandchildren: Gabby, Noah, Casey, Annie, Natalie, Finn, Lydia, Wyatt, William, and Stella; other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Hazel, wife, Viola, and daughter-in-law, Sherry K. Briney.
