Obituary for Helen Louise Skaggs

Helen Louise Skaggs, 88, of Earlham, Iowa, recently of Madison Square in Winterset passed away March 10, 2016 at the Madison County Hospital in Winterset. Visitation will be held 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Earlham Chapel. Funeral services following the visitation at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Earlham Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s name to the Earlham Fire & Rescue.

Helen was born February 11, 1928 in Creston, Iowa to Ralph E. and Mae Naomi Patterson Lane. She grew up on the family farm near Truro, Iowa and graduated Truro High School with the class of 1945. Shortly after graduating, Helen moved to Council Bluffs where she lived and worked. She was united in marriage to Harry PW Skaggs on February 14, 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Harry Jr. and Carol. Following their marriage they lived in Swea City and in 1948 they rented Helen’s dad’s farm near Truro. They also farmed west of Winterset until 1962 when they moved to their farm near Earlham. They retired in 2008 and moved into Earlham. Helen continued living in Earlham until her health wouldn’t allow and then moved into Madison Square Assisted Living in Winterset. Helen was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Winterset, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and cooked for church events. She also served as a 4-H leader while her children were growing up. Helen and Harry enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends and visited places such as Montana, where they rafted the Snake River. They also enjoyed their visits to Boston, Colorado and Louisiana. Other enjoyments were playing pitch with their friends, gardening, canning, was an avid quilter and enjoyed making baby quilts for family and dear friends, crossword puzzle’s and watching Iowa and Iowa State Basketball.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Harry Sr., and her siblings, Darrel, Orval, Ward, Bernice and Naomi.

Helen leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Harry (Mary) Skaggs of Earlham, Iowa and Carol (Lloyd Kight) Belding of Earlham, Iowa, 4 grandchildren, Jamie (Lori DeVault) Belding, Kim Skaggs, Paul Skaggs and Chris Skaggs; 4 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
