Thursday, January 9, 1947Fatal Heart attack Takes Life of Anthony Mabbitt.
Passed Away About 2 o'clock Monday p.m.
Funeral services are being held this Thursday afternoon for Anthony Mabbitt, pioneer Redfield resident, who died of a heart attack Monday afternoon, January 6, at his home near the old mill which has been associated with the Mabbitt and Eppard families ever since the town was started.
Mr. Mabbitt, who was past 80, had been failing slightly but still able to be about his work and apparently almost as active as ever and his usual cheery self. However on Christmas day he suffered a slight heart attack and had been warned by his doctor to take it easy. When the end came he was in his chair in the living room.
All of the children have come home for the last rites. Mr. and Mr. Clarence Mabbitt of Knoxville came immediately. Mrs. Ethel Harden and her daughter, who had spent the holidays here with her family and had left for her home in Wisconsin just the week before, arrived Tuesday and the Harry Mabbitt family of Washington, D. C. arrived Wednesday morning. Mrs. Violet Chilton came Wednesday night.
Mrs. Olive Hurd is in charge of the service at the local Christian Church and burial is being made at a family cemetery near Early Chapel south of Earlham.

Services Held In Redfield Christian Church
Last rites were held at the Redfield Church of Christ last Thursday afternoon, January 9, at one o’clock for Anthony Mabbitt with the Rev. Mrs. Olive Hurd of Garwin in charge.
Mrs. C. E. Porter furnished the instrumental music and also accompanied a mail quartet, composed of Harold Ellis, Elvin Cave, William Cadwell and Cecil Smith who sang “No Night There” and “Wonderful Peace”.
The pall bearers were Gene Frye, Glen Cave, Press Johnson, Don Towns, Frank Forsyth and Mike Lamb.
Interment was at the family cemetery in Madison county south of Earlham.
Obituary
Anthony Mabbitt, second son of William and Samantha Mabbitt, was born Nov. 17, 1866 in Madison county, Iowa. He was one of a family of six sons and five daughters, the only survivor being Charles of Redfield. Anthony departed this life Monday Jan. 6, 1947, following an illness of about two weeks, at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 20 days.
He was married to Sarah Ellen Eppard, daughter of William and Mary Eppard of Madison county, on June 24, 1890. To this union were born five children, one dying in infancy. The surviving children are Ethel Harden of Medford, Wis., Clarence of Knoxville, Iowa, Harry of Washington, D. C., and Violette Chilton of Fort Plain, New York. In June 1940 Mr. and Mrs. Mabbitt celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Besides his widow and children, nine-grandchildren and four great grand-children survive him, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
The first two years of their married life was spent on farms in Madison county. In 1892 they moved to Redfield where Mr. Mabbitt took charge of the Redfield Flour Mills.
He was employed here until the owners, his father and Mrs. Mabbitt’s father, disposed of the business. There after he operated a generating plant and sub station and at the time of his death was employed by the Iowa Electric Co., thus continuing his work in the same location for over 53 years.
During his younger and more active years Mr. Mabbitt was a member of the Redfield City Council and school board and was actively affiliated with the Modern Woodman of the World, nights of Pythias, and in 1920 received his 25 year jewel from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of which he was a devoted member at the time of his death.
The passing of a man such as Anthony Mabbitt is a distinct loss to a community, which he served so well and he will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew him.
The legacy he leaves which would be the greatest satisfaction to him, is the love an admiration of his children and grand-children. His memory and his training and above all his example will continue to inspire and guide them as long as they live.
