Ruth Marquis, daughter of Elias Vern Stickel and Effie Mae Wilson Stickel was born August 30, 1920 in St. James, Minnesota and passed from this life Friday, March 4, 2016 at Westridge Quality Care & Rehabilitation at 95 years of age.
Ruth received her education in the Truro and New Virginia schools and graduated from New Virginia High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Gerald Marquis on November 29, 1941 at New Virginia, Iowa. A week after their marriage Pearl Harbor was bombed and Gerald and Ruth enlisted in the United States Military. Since they were not allowed to join the same branch, Gerald enlisted in the United States Marines and Ruth Enlisted in the United States Navy and served her country with the W.A.V.E.S. for two years during World War II.
Following their service, Ruth and Gerald made their home in California and their marriage was blessed with two children, Michael and Marla. For a number of years, Ruth was the secretary at the assessor’s office in Redding, California. Ruth enjoyed sewing, baking, square and round dancing as well as crossword puzzles.
Ruth and Gerald moved to Iowa in 1984 and Gerald passed away in 1985. She was later united in marriage to Fred Knizley on May 25, 1994 in Clarinda, Iowa.
While in Clarinda, she was a member of the Square Dance Club, Hospital Auxiliary and the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She also loved to travel. Two of her most memorable trips were to Russia and China.
Those relatives who preceded Ruth in death were her parents; husband, Gerald Marquis, sisters, Maxine Brim, Bette Core, and her brother, Doyle Stickel.
Ruth leaves to cherish her memory; son, Michael (Dora) Marquis of Klamath Falls, OR; daughter, Marla (Martin) Mattes of Clarinda, IA, grandchildren, Jeffrey Marquis of Truckee, CA; Andrew (Kathy) Mattes of Greenwood, IN and Scott (Kimberly) Mattes of Des Moines, IA. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Tyler Mattes, Alanna Holkte, Holly Mattes, Paige Mattes, Karley Mattes as well as many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
