Samuel A. Ross was born in Warren co., Ohio, February 9, 1827 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elijah Jones, in Madison co., Ia., March 3, 1905, being 78 years, 21 days old.

He was married to Sarah A. Emery January 3, 1849 and moved to Madison co. in 1857, being one of its first settlers. To this union were born four daughters, of whom Mrs. Elijah Jones and Mrs. John Queen survive him, the others dying in youth and his companion proceeding him by five years. Funeral services were held from Union Chapel Sunday afternoon and interment made at that place.

Obituary

Samuel A. Ross was born in Warren county, Ohio, Feb. 9th, 1827, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elijah Jones, in Madison county, Ia., March 3rd, 1905, being 78 years and 21 days old when death claimed him.

He was married to Sarah A. Emery, January 3, 1849 and moved to Madison county, Iowa, in 1857, being one of its pioneer settlers. To this union was born four daughters, of whom Mrs. Elijah Jones and Mrs. J. L. Queen survive him, the other two dying in youth. His wife departed this life a few years ago. He leaves behind to mourn his loss these two daughters, a number of grand-children and a host of friends. The funeral occurred Sunday, March 5th, conducted by Rev. W. W. Williams, of Peru, and he was laid to rest in the Union Chapel cemetery.

One more loved one here has left us,
Gone from all the cares of life,
All his sufferings he bore with patience
Never weared though long the time.

‘Tis so hard to part with dear father,
And so lonely we will be,
But we hope to meet in Heaven
Where no parting will ever be.

Old Settler Dies. In Scott Township. Was Pioneer Citizen and Prominent Man.

Samuel A. Ross of Scott Township died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elijah Jones, Friday of last week. He had been in feeble health for several years and in recent years had had several dangerous attacks of sickness. He was 78 years old.

Mr. Ross was one of the prominent men and farmers of the eastern part of the county and was widely known. He was a man of sterling integrity and honesty and had a host of friends. He was a man of untiring industry.

Mr. Ross came to Iowa from Warren County, Ohio in 1857 with his wife who was then Sarah A. Emery and settled on their old farm east of the city, where they lived happily for over forty years. Mrs. Ross died five years ago. Of the four daughters born to them only two survive, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. John Queen.
