Thomas Roy, one of the early settlers of Madison county, died at his home west of town early Wednesday morning. He had been rapidly failing in health for the past two years and his death is attributed to heart disease and dropsy. Mr. Roy would have been 85 years old next July.

He leaves five children, Douglas, David and John of this county and one son one daughter living in Washington state. Funeral services were held from the Hooten school house this forenoon and interment made in the Hooten cemetery. Pitzer Post G.A.R. had charge of the burial service.

Thomas Roy Dead

Wednesday at about 1 a.m., Thomas Roy died at his home in Lincoln township. Mr. Roy was one of Madison county’s pioneers having moved here in 1856.

The funeral was held today at the Hooten schoolhouse conducted by Rev. Jordan. The G.A.R. Post, of this city of which he was a member were in attendance. We will publish is obituary next week.

THOMAS ROY DEAD

Pioneer Citizen of Lincoln Township Passes Away. Was Very Old.

Thomas Roy of Lincoln township died at his home Tuesday night at the advanced age of 85 years. He had been in feeble health for several months.

The funeral occurred at the residence Thursday morning, the Odd Fellows lodge of Winterset of which he had always been a prominent member having charge of the exercises.

Thomas Roy came to Madison county in 1854 and settled on a farm near the old homestead. He was always a man of much influence in every organization to which he belonged and was a man of sterling honesty and worth. His rugged character made hosts of friends. He was known all over the county as “Uncle Tom”.

The funeral was largely attended, a great number of Winterset friends attending. He has four sons living, and two daughters. Mrs. Roy died several years ago.
