Mary Dalton, Afton, Iowoa

Mary Dalton, 90, of Afton, died Sunday, December 6, 2015 at her home in rural Afton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton. Pastor Joel Sutton will officiate.

Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston.

Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Afton Community Center. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com .

Mary Jean Landers, daughter of Edna R. (Haynes) Landers and Perry H. Landers, was born October 11, 1925 in rural Madison County, Iowa. She attended rural schools in Madison and Union County and attended high school in Murray, Iowa.

On June 9, 1942, Mary married Albert Junior Dalton in Grant City, Mo. They farmed in Jones Township, where Mary managed the family dairy cow operation. Moving to Creston in 1960, Mary worked at Tober's Dress Shop and First National Bank. They later moved to Springfield Ill., Mary managed a department within Block's Department Store. Moving to Indianapolis, Ind., where they lived until retirement, Mary worked in a Tea Room. They moved back to Creston in 1977, where she worked as a night clerk in Berning's Motor Inn.

Mary retired in 1990 and returned to the Afton area, after the death of her husband. She was a volunteer at the Afton Care Center and loved puzzling with the ladies at Fairview Housing. She enjoyed attending the meal site and visiting with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her three children, Harold (April Austin) Dalton and Judy (husband Joe) Chastain, all of Afton, and Jim Dalton of Sumter, S.C.; grandchildren, Shelly (Kelly) James of Mt. Ayr; Pam (Brett) Mathis of Des Moines; Jeff (Shannon) Chastain of Hebron, Ky.; Jim (Amy) Chastain of Glenwood, Iowa; Jill (Sam) McKnight of Afton; Michelle Corsi of Calif., Brent (Carolyn) Dalton of Walterboro, S.C.; Lacey and Carissa Dalton of the Afton area; step-grandchildren, Brittany and Ashley Malone; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, great-grandson, Mark James Chastain, daughter-in-law, Kay Dalton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth (Leona) Landers, Howard Landers and Jack (Mardena) Landers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth (Dale) Davis; Doris (Nolan) Huntsman and Faye (Raymond) Wolfe, brother-in-law, Harold (Cleofa) Dalton, sisters-in law, Geneva (Fred) Frey and Cecil (Elvin) King and nieces, Donna (Huntsman) Donner and Carol (Huntsman) Wise.
