Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
November 28, 1957

John Cowan, who died suddenly from a heart attack in his home in Earlham on November 19, 1957, was born, one of five children, at What Cheer, Iowa on August 20, 1892. He married Miss Sarah Connor on April 4, 1911 at Everest, Iowa and they lived there for two years.

He then served as the superintendent of a mine at Melcher where they lived for thirteen years, and of a mine at Orilla, Iowa, and then of a mine at Alpha, Illinois. They moved to Des Moines in 1928. For the past five years he has managed a pit and quarry at Earlham.

He was baptized as a child in the Presbyterian church. He was a loyal member of the Masonic lodge. He was a favorite of children, and a real friend to his fellow workers and neighbors. His sudden death is not only a loss to his family circle, but also to his community.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Jerry.

The memorial service was conducted by the Rev. Ted Mansen on Nov. 21 in the McLaren Funeral Home, and interment was in the Rest Haven cemetery, West Des Moines. The pallbearers were James Mercer, Harry Blount, M. S. Moore, Gilbert Fathergill, C. A. Sandusky and Hugh Mercer.
