Norman Lester Smith, 74, of Sanford, NC, formerly of Tucson, Ariz., died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC after a prolonged battle with cancer.
No services are planned, however in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield (P.O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577.
Mr. Smith was born in Winterset, Iowa, on May 12, 1941, to the late Rollin O. Smith and Alberta A. Murphy Smith. Mr. Smith played varsity basketball at Amphitheater High School in Tucson, Ariz. He joined the U.S. Army after high school and spent years working as a heavy equipment operator for a copper mine. He eventually retired as a correctional officer.
He is survived by his daughters, Kippir L. (Douglas) Westbrook of Sanford, NC, and Kelly J. (Ken) Larkin of Tucson, Ariz;, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
