Doris attended the Gardner Consolidated Schools near Perry as a youngster, which were one-room country schools. Her early memories include going to the fields with her father, riding on the plowhorse's back while he worked the land.
She was a 1944 graduate of Woodward High School, and continued her education at Simpson College in Indianola, where she studied business for two years. She was then employed at Bankers Life Company in Des Moines for 7 years doing clerical and secretarial work.

Doris was a stay-at-home mother when the children were young, and became a home health aide after Frank's health forced his retirement in 1976. They moved to Winterset when Frank's Parkinson's Disease grew debilitating and she nursed him at home until his death in June 1997.
Doris lived in Winterset for many more years before moving to Albany, Missouri in 2010 to be closer to her eldest daughter. In September 2014, Doris moved to Oskaloosa to be close to her sister, Darlene Shepherd.
Doris was a 60 year member of the Eastern Star throughout her life, and held several offices including Worthy Matron. She was president of the women's group in her church in Winterset, and a founding member of a quilting club there that made infant quilts for donation to premature infants in area hospitals.
