Thursday, August 18, 1955Funeral services for W. A. Mark were held Monday afternoon, August 1, beginning at 2:30 at the De Soto Methodist church. Mr. Mark passed away July 29 at the Madison County Memorial hospital in Winterset where he was hospitalized about ten days following a heart attack and stroke. The pastor of the church, Rev. Aldreth V. Weigel officiated. Arrangements were in charge of the Fisher Funeral Service. Mrs. J. L. Riley, soloist sang, “Abide With Me” and “No Night There”, with Mrs. Max Riley, pianist.
The casket bearers were Harold Gearhart, Nile McKibben, Harry Chestnutwood, Mill Morris, Vernon Mark and Bert Dunbar. Mrs. Yvonne Rhodes and Mrs. Nile McKibben assisted with the flowers. Burial was in the Oakland cemetery south of De Soto. He was affiliated with the Methodist church.
The W.S.C.S. of the church served a lunch at noon to the relatives.
William Arthur Mark, son of William and Mary Catherine Mark, was born on a farm near De Soto, Iowa, July 11, 1874. On Sunday, July 10, a group of relatives went to his home for a co-operative dinner in honor of his 81st birthday. Most of his life was spent near and in De Soto. He was married to Jessie Heath, September 15, 1910. To this union were born two sons, Paul and Harry Clifford. Farming was his occupation from which he retired in 1935. After his retirement, he and his wife spent a few months at Grants Pass, Oregon, where her sister, Mrs. Iona Waggoner resides. At the conclusion of their stay there they moved to De Soto where they have resided since.
He is survived by his wife, Jessie, two sons, Paul of near Booneville and Harry Clifford of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Larry and Norman Mark of near Booneville, and Carolyn, Janice, Ronnie and Craig Mark of Des Moines; one brother, Frank Mark of De Soto; a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends who mourn his passing. He was one of a family of seven children of which one brother, Frank survives. Three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Among the out of town relatives who attended the rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mark and family of near Booneville; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Clifford Mark and family of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Mark and Mrs. Anna Ory of Metamora, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mark and baby of Toluca, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Mark and family of Lucas; Clarence Mark of Queen City, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gearhart and Mrs. James Smith of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Morris of Winterset; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Mark of Earlham; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Cook of Earlham; Paul Armstrong of Earlham; Mervyn Armstrong of Earlham; Charley Price of Earlham; Mr. and Mrs. Harry McKibben of Earlham; Mrs. Edith Conger, Ray Mark and Mr. and Mrs. Millard Conger of Adel; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hindman of Milo; Mr. and Mrs. Zene Wynkoop and Mr. and Mrs. Avery Wynkoop of Earlham; Mr. and Mrs. Dewey McKibben and son of Lewellen, Nebraska and others from the vicinity of De Soto.
