Obituary for HERBERT T. REED, Winterset

Herbert Theodore Reed, son of John Fred Reed, Sr. and Honor Amanda Creger Reed was born June 21, 1926 in Truro, Iowa and peacefully passed from this life Thursday, October 22, 2015 at his home in Winterset, Iowa at 89 years of age.

Herb received his education in Truro High School graduating in 1944. Soon after, he was united in marriage to Dorothy "Dottie" Lucille Durfey on May 5, 1945 in Truro, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children; John, Mary Louise, Fred and Honor.

He was later united in marriage to Marjorie Durfey Smith on December 1, 2001.

Herbert began his career with his brothers, Fred Jr. and Harry in the fertilizer, chemical and lumber business known as Reed Brothers. Herb later founded and was the owner/operator of Circle B Cashway lumber company which grew to seven retail lumber yards as well as various manufacturing operations. Herb also spent a great deal of time as a land developer and homebuilder within Winterset and various other communities such as Newton, Commanche and Indianola. In 1973, Herb was appointed by Governor Robert D. Ray to the Iowa Conservation Commission where he served for two terms and was a past Chairman. He also served on the Finance Committee of the Madison County Historical Society for many years.

Herb was raised as a Mason in the Ivy Lodge in Truro and later transferred to the Evening Star Lodge in Winterset. He became a member of the consistory when he was raised to the thirty second degree. He then became a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines and the R.O.J. #46. He was also proud of his membership in the Defense Orientation Conference Association (DOCA). Herb was a devoted sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing and shared a passion for flying with his brothers and other family members. However, Herb was happiest when his family was around him--the more the better! He loved the little ones most, especially the babies. He would hold and rock them for as long as he could.

Those relatives who preceded Herbert in death were his father, John Fred Reed, Sr.; mother, Honor Amanda Reed; wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Lucille Reed; and his older brother, John Fred Reed, Jr.

Herbert leaves to cherish his memory; wife, Marjorie Reed of Winterset, IA, son, John (Jane) Reed of Winterset, IA, daughter, Mary Louise (John) Alles of Chillicothe, MO, son, Fred (Julie) Reed of Johnston, IA; daughter, Honor (Dr. Joel) Sears of Spokane, WA, adopted son, Samil (Beth) Sermet of Vancouver, WA, grandchildren, Angella (Tim) Cole; Jennifer (Scott) Allen; David (Jenny) Reed; Jason (Jenny) Alles; Brandon (Jessica) Alles; Nicholas Reed (Fiance, Sarah Feerhusen); Spencer Reed (Fiance, Ashley Capone); Samuel Reed; Andrea (Dan) Thompson; Colin (Allison) Sears; Amanda (Nathan) Phillips; Serra Sermet (Kenan Ginsberg); Mert (Tracy) Sermet, 15 great-grandchildren; twin brother, Harry F.
