Norbert Paul Smith was born on July 21, 1939 in Aurora, Ia to Oscar and Hazel Franck Smith. He died peacefully on September 15, 2015 at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.
He was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aurora and spent all his school years there, graduating in 1956. He was drafted into the Army and served from 1962-1964. Norbert was always a hard worker and had a variety of jobs: farm hand, well drilling, the Aurora Elevator, hauling produce to Chicago and working with his dad in the blacksmith shop.
On August 11, 1967 he married Joanne (Weiss) Smith at Mt. Olive in Des Moines where Joanne taught school and played the organ. Norbert attended Grandview College for 2 years and drove for Ruan Transportation, Triple F feeds, and Vitalis Truck Lines before starting SMT Company in 1984. He retired in 2011. Norbert and his family are charter members of Faith Lutheran, Adel since moving to their Earlham acreage in 1977.
Norbert is survived by Joanne, his wife of 48 years and their 3 sons and families: David and Teresa (Speedling) Smith of Earlham – Sarah, Tiffany, Joshua, Rachel, Joel and Amanda; Daniel Smith of Ankeny; Darrel and Heather (Cummins) Smith of Adel – Jordan, Wade and Mason; his twin brother, Norman and Kathie Smith of Leawood, Ks, nieces, nephews, extended family, his church family and friends.
Services were at Faith in Adel on Saturday, September 19 with cremains interred at a later date in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa to help them continue to provide the loving care they provided Norbert and Joanne during the final months of his life.
