February 16, 1926 - September 8, 2015Robert Guion, 89, of Winterset, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at his home.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 10 at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where his family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 11 at Ochiltree’s.
Burial with military honors will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 14 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter.Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
Robert “Bob” Russell Guion, son of George Franklin and Italia Teresa (Scribante) Guion, was born February 16, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a direct descendent of the first white male born west of the Mississippi. His family moved to Madison County in the 1930’s and served his country during World War II having enlisted in the United States Navy.
Bob was united in marriage to Dora Lou Van Rossum on October 19, 1952 at the Christian Church in Barney.
Bob worked and retired from the Winterset Post Office and previously worked with Solar Aircraft in Des Moines. He was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Winterset as well as the Masonic Lodge. Additionally, he was a member of the Winterset Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8142 and American Legion Post #184 and served both organizations in various capacities throughout the years, including commander of both. Many in Winterset will recall his work as a sports photographer, taking many photographs at countless Winterset High School sporting events.
Bob was a serious cribbage player and also enjoyed fishing and golfing.
He is survived by his wife and companion of nearly 63 years, Dora Lou Guion; two sons, Robert Guion, Jr; Tim (Tami) Guion all of Winterset; two special grandchildren, Tucker and Tara Guion; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Blanche (Glenn, Sr.) Buckles, George (Alice) Guion, Jr. and Margaret Tuttle
