A. Wilson Goodwin, Ames

Albert Wilson Goodwin, 99, of Ames, Iowa died August 29, 2015 at Green Hills Health Care Center.

Wilson was born January 5, 1916 to Boyd and Hattie Goodwin in Yetter, Iowa. He graduated at age 16 from Lanesboro High School in 1932 and continued his education at the Iowa Barber College, Sioux City, Iowa graduating in 1934. He then enrolled at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, using his barbering skills to finance his studies. After graduating from Simpson in 1938, he taught high school mathematics and science, and coached baseball and basketball at St. Charles, Iowa.

Wilson was married to Nina Ruth Hawes in 1938 and then continued teaching and coaching at Greenfield, Iowa.

In 1942, he was called to service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. While he was in officer training school, he received his Master's degree in science and mathematics from The University of Chicago. He then was stationed in Hawaii and also Guam as a meteorologist. He was discharged in 1946.

He was then employed with the Des Moines public Schools as a high school science and mathematics teacher and baseball coach. Later he was the Supervisor of Mathematics for the Des Moines School District. He wrote two Geometry text books during this time and spent those years living in Indianola, Iowa and then Des Moines, Iowa.

When he retired in 1982, he and his wife, Nina, moved to Ames, Iowa to be near family.

Wilson enjoyed watching Chicago Cubs baseball, playing golf, bridge, reading books, and writing poetry.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ames, Iowa. He also belonged to the Ames Kiwanis.

As Nina's health deteriorated they moved from their home on Buchanan Drive, Ames, Iowa to reside at the Green Hills Retirement Community. A few years after her death he moved to the Health Care Center there.

Wilson is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Lee Manning of Pasadena, California, and a son, Robert Wilson (Judy) Goodwin of Ames, Iowa. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great- granddaughter.

No memorial service is scheduled. There will be a private family graveside service at a later date.
