John Leroy Hart of Indianola, Iowa, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer which left him in need of dialysis that eventually his body could no longer tolerate.
John was born December 3, 1933, in Edmond, Oklahoma, to John Irvin and Lois Axson Maple Hart. John was the oldest of three children, and as a young 12 year old boy he came to believe by faith that Jesus Christ died and rose again to save him from his sins. He always made it a priority to serve his Savior through the local church in many ways throughout his adult life.
John was an Army Veteran who served during the Korean War guarding the Panama Canal. Following his time in the military, he worked several jobs including grocery retail, farming, and for the majority of his life, as an engineer with Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Co. in Seattle, Washington. John never lost his love of farming and the outdoors, and always continued to garden, hunt, and fish. John and Janis moved to Indianola, Iowa in 2001 and became members of the Indianola Regular Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Janis Hart, of Indianola IA; one sister, Joreta Speck of Chautauqua, NY; three children: Wayne (Donna) Hart of Sinclairville, NY, Kathy (Clifford) Stephenson of St Charles, IA, and Wanda Hart-Habecker of Milton, FL; eight grandchildren: Joel (Carrie) Hart, Aaron (Anna) Hart, Jason (Emily) Hart, Dean (Ahnada) Stephenson, Angela (Paul) DeYarman, Shana Stephenson, Tausha (Matt) Meyers, and Clayton Habecker; thirteen great-grandchildren: Zachary, Natalie, David, Reed, Ivy, Silas, and Judah Hart; Anberlin, and Juliana Stephenson; Kade DeYarman; Weston, Nora, and Bennett Meyers; and many grandchildren through the legal guardianship of Glenn (Amy), Walter, and Paul (Becky) Prindle: Christine, Bethany, Sarah, James (Rebecca), Andrew, Laura, Peter, Wesley, Levi, Kendra, Silas Prindle, Hannah (Blake) Tarvin; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Forest.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, August 27 at the Indianola Regular Baptist Church with burial following in the St. Charles Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 pm, Wednesday, August 26 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present from 6 to 8 pm. Memorials may be given to the Indianola Regular Baptist Church in John’s name.
