Jesse A. Ross, son of Caroline and William Ross, was born on a farm east of Dexter in Madison county on October 26th, 1876 and died August 16th at the age of 72 years, nine months and 19 days after a short illness. He attended the Penn township country schools and was also taught by his father who was a teacher. In 1906 he moved to Dexter where he was foreman of the Dexter Washing Machine Co.

He was married March 12th, 1910 to Elmyra Garmire Wetrich. To this union were born three children: Jesse E. and Edwin F. both of Dexter and Katharine Towey of Des Moines. He also raised a step daughter, Bernice Hannan of Chicago.

Soon after his marriage he was appointed substitute mail carrier for two years. Then he took up painting and paper hanging until the year 1946 when his health and eye sight made it impossible for him to carry on his work. During his life in Dexter he served the community 40 years as a volunteer fireman.

Mr. Ross leaves to mourn, his wife and family, one granddaughter, Jean Hannan Clark of Chicago; two brothers, William G. of Palto Alto, California; and Robert L. of Pomeroy and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held at the Dexter Methodist church Thursday, August 18th conducted by the pastor of the church. Mr. Robert Lawson sang two appropriate sons with Mrs. Robert Lawson at the piano.

That which was mortal was laid to rest at the local cemetery.
