Vernon M. Ritter, a retired Winterset business man and a leading citizen of this community for over half a century, died Thursday. August 9, at Memorial hospital here. He was 87 years of age.
Mr. Ritter was a life-long resident of Madison county, He was born here August 9, 1884, a son of Isaac and Jennie Brock Ritter. As a young man he attended Highland Park Business college in Des Moines for two years.
He was married in 1910 to Ada White. Her death occurred in 1957. His second marriage in 1953, was to Jessie Braman who survives him
For 20 years, from 1915 to 1935, Mr. Ritter served as manager of the Graham store in Winterset. In that latter year, he established the Ritter Insurance agency in Winterset, which he operated with his two sons, Kenneth and Loren Ritter. He retired from active business in 1966.
Mr. Ritter was active in the First United Methodist church of Winterset, serving as a trustee for many years. He was a member of the Madison lodge, I.O.O.F. here, and in other community services and organizations over a long period of years.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son Kenneth Ritter of Winterset, three grandchildren, and one great grandson. One son, Loren Ritter, preceded him in death in 1947.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the First United Methodist church of Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Newton Coughenour, and the Rev. Walter A. Samp. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
