March 1955Silas R. Overholser, son of Jacob and Cora Overholser, was born near Diagonal, Iowa June 1, 1880 and departed this life March 19, 1955 at the age of 74 years, nine months and l8 days.
Following his early education, he went into business in Diagonal, in which he was engaged until 1918 when he entered the Omaha Theological Seminary, graduating on April 28, 1921. He served the following pastorates Nodaway and Mt. Zion, Hamburg, Woodbine and Earlham. He served thirty-four years as an active pastor, retiring September 1, 1953. Since this time, he has served vacant churches preaching his last sermon at Menlo and Dexter on Sunday, March 13th.
He was united in marriage to Georgia A. Kenyon on February 21, 1906 in Diagonal, Iowa. To this union was born one son, C. Wayne Overholser of Marshalltown, Iowa, also a minister in the Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife, son, Wayne, two granddaughters, Sharon and Judith, and one sister, Mrs. Hewitt Christy of Mitchell, Nebraska.

Seldom do words seem more inadequate to express depth of feeling than they do today, as people have assembled here to pay tribute to a beloved departed friend. Mr. Overholser came to Earlham Presbyterian church in 1938 and has endeared himself to all who were privileged to know him.
Rev. S. R. Overholser Services Wednesday
Funeral services were held for S. R. Overholser at the Earlham Presbyterian church Wednesday, March 23 at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Harry C. Shiffler assisted by Rev. Donald E. Freeman and Rev. Anthony Blankers had charge of the services.
Mrs. R. W. Godby, Mrs. D. B. Hardin, W. F. Price and W. C. Price, accompanied by Mrs. Lucile Schalkle, sang “Lead Kindly Light: and “The Holy City.”
Honorary casket bearers were D. S. Ralston, G. D. Jackson, Harry Frey, J. F. Junkin, Marion Compton and D. B. Hardin. The casket bearers were: Russell Ralston, Sheldon Strong, Gale Marston, Earl Schalkle, Ralph Hunter and B. G. Harris.
Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
