Feb. 23, 1927 - Jun. 17, 2015Donald Ray Christensen, 88, of Winterset, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Saturday, June 20, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Pastor Joel Nau officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
Don was born on February 23, 1927, at Winterset, Iowa to Jake and Emma (Huston) Christensen. At an early age, Don enlisted in the Merchant Marines and a short time later, enlisted in the US Navy and served during WW II and later the Korean Conflict.
Don lived in Winterset and wintered in Las Vegas. He retired as a building manager for Central Life Assurance in Des Moines. Don had been a Mason and member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He was married on July 26, 1976 at Las Vegas, Nevada, to Janet Joy Moser.
Don is survived by his daughter, Kim (Mike) Voshell of Indianola; step children, Steven (Kim) Sobolik of Atlanta, GA, Michael Sobolik of Lincoln, NE, Patrick Sobolik of Socorro, NM, and Brenda (Jim) Watke of Omaha, NE; brothers, Loren (Darlene) Christensen of Des Moines and Bill (Georgia) Christensen of Winterset; grandchildren, Mark Christensen, Karen Karnes, Jason Hainline, Nathan Rowland, and Juliene
Christensen; and twelve great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Emma (Huston) Christensen; wife, Janet Christensen; first wife Grace Farmer; and son, Neil Christensen.
Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 PM at the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to his family for a future designation.
