Hayes H. HAMILTON, the son of John and Lydia Hamilton, was born in Union township near Winterset, Madison County, Iowa on November 8, 1876 and died Sunday evening, March 12, 1950 at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines.

In 1903 he married Virgie Wynkoop of the Fairview community near Earlham, Iowa and they made their first home near that church. In 1908 they moved to the farm in Jackson township which was his home until the time of his death. On Wednesday, March 1st, he drove away from this homestead on one more trip which took him far beyond the highest stars. He doesn’t plan to return for he has found a better land in which to live. As Enoch, “he walked with God, and was not, for God took him”

His wife preceded him in death in 1935 and a daughter, Mary in 1916. Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Lois Taylor of Jackson township, and a son, Clifton Hamilton, of Lebanon, Missouri; three grandchildren: Galen Hamilton of Vienna, Austria; Mary Howard of Peoria, Illinois; and Virginia Hamilton of Lebanon, Missouri; four great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Lilly Maxwell, of Winterset and Edith Tilton of Lorimor, Iowa.

Mr. Hamilton has taken a prominent part in the work of the West Star church serving as teacher, Sunday School superintendent and on the church board down through the years. In later life he was awarded the position of Honorary Steward which is the highest award given lay members of the church.

The funeral service was held in his home church Tuesday, March 14, 1950 at 2:00 o’clock with burial in the Winterset Cemetery; Rev. A. R. Weed of Tingley, Iowa conducting the services with Rev. Howard Washburn minister of the church assisting. Mrs. Peter Bock and Mrs. Ralph Hunter of Earlham sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Just Outside the Eastern Gate.” Thomas Clague closed a very beautiful service with the singing of ”Sunnse.” Mrs. Mervyn McLennan accompanied the singers at the piano.

Surely it was written of Hayes when the scriptures said, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor than silver and gold.”
