William John Spence was born a October 12, 1888, on a farm in Douglas township, to David Taylor Spence and Elizabeth Thomson Spence. He graduated from Earlham high school in 1908. He farmed the home farm in Douglas township until 1939, then farmed in Dallas county until 1943 when he moved to near Waterloo, and made his home with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Gibson, where he died of a heart attack on February 10, 1957.

He was a life-long member the Pitzer church until 1950 when he transferred his membership to the Barclay church near Waterloo.

He is survived by one brother, David Spence, of Oelwein, and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Bates,
Telluride, Colorado; Mrs. Vasha Sorensen, Arlington, Virginia; and Mrs. Janet Gibbon, Waterloo, Iowa. Also eight nieces and nephews, and nine great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Bessie Huff, one niece and one nephew.

Funeral services were held in Jesup, on February 13th, with graveside services and burial in the
Winterset cemetery.

William J. Spence Buried at Winterset

William J. Spence, a native of Douglas township, died Sunday, Feb. 10, at Waterloo, where he was making his home with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Gibson.

Mr. Spence was 68 years of age at his death. He was a son of David T. and Elizabeth Thomson Spence, and was born in Douglas township Oct. 12, 1888. He was graduated from Earlham high school with the class of 1908, and farmed on the home place until 1939. After that he farmed in Dallas county until 1943, when he moved to Waterloo.

He was a member of the Pitzer church until 1943, when he transferred to the Barclay church near Waterloo.

Surviving are his brother, David Spence of Oelwein; and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Bates of Telluride, Colo., Mrs. Vasha Sorensen of Arlington, Va., and Mrs. Janet Gibson of Waterloo.

Funeral services were held last Wednesday in Jessup, with graveside services and burial in the Winterset cemetery.
