John Merritt Walton was born near De Soto, September 12, 1876, and passed away at his home near Minburn, June 30, 1948, his life span being 71 years, nine months and 12 days.

On January 23, 1900 he was united in marriage to Belle Fry, a companionship which grew deeper with the years. To this union was born one son, Paul, who survives.

To live and serve nearly 72 years, and with the passing of the years, to grow more gentle, more appreciative of loved ones, friends and their ministries, more confident that life is precious and worthwhile, more trustful of a heavenly Father’s never failing love and care, more assured that at the end of the way lies eternal joy and reward, reveals the greatness of the soul and proves that such a life was one long journey upward.

His business was that of wrestling a living from the soil. His life was a continuous reaching out for the highest and best in life as preparation for the eternal years. He knew the close and happy communion of a contended life, which included association with neighbors whose lot was akin to his.

Mr. Walton was a member of the Earlham Friends church.
