Services for Paul Monroe, 81, co-founder of the Monroe Company in Colfax, were held Saturday, Dec. 5, 1970, at 2 p. m. in the Colfax Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Monroe died Wednesday, Dec. 2nd at the Nelson Manor in Newton where he had resided for nearly three years.
The son of William H. and May Clark Monroe, he was born June 30, 1889, at Dexter, Iowa, and was graduated from Earlham Academy and Drake University Law School. For 3 years, before coming to Colfax in 1913, he served as assistant cashier at the Dexter Savings Bank. In Colfax he joined his father in the Close-To-Nature Company. Later they, along with Mrs. Monroe, organized the present Monroe Company. Their son, James, joined the company in 1942.
Mr. Monroe was a member of the Colfax Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, and Za-Ga-Zig shrine.
He was a good business man and beyond his own business was a Trustee of Drake University, and had been President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Colfax for many years. He also served on the Board of Directors at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for a time.
Mr. Monroe was very interested in music and was a fine trumpet player. he was an original member of the Des Moines Shrine Band, which made appearances from coast to coast. For many years he was a faithful member of the Colfax Municipal Band.
He was interested in all sports, was a main founder of the Colfax Golf and Country Club, and was active during its years of development.
Mr. Monroe was always concerned with the betterment of his community. His kindness and generosity will be long remembered.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, James in 1962, and a sister, Mrs. Gladys Stribling.
Surviving are his wife, Marie; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Roy Allen Wilson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiated at the service.
Miss Eleanor Howell was the organist.
The bearers were: Theodore Gableman, George Paynter, Richard Peterson, Joseph Slatkoski, Robert Underwood and Arthur Vaughn.
Honorary bearers were: Howard Bell, Robert Hopkins, Dale Noe, John Pratt, George S. Weirick and Tom Wilson.
Mrs. Elmer Bell, Mrs. Horace Lockhart, Mrs. George Paynter and Joyce L. Orcutt took care of the flowers.
Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery.
Graveside rites were by riverside Masonic Lodge No. 389 of Colfax.
