Page 1Agnes Smith Clark Houlette was born near Belfast, Ireland, July 14, 1828 and died August 4, 1911 at one o’clock at her home near St. Charles, Iowa, aged 89 years and 19 days. When 8 years of age she came with her parents, James and Margaret Clark, to America, and settled in Pennsylvania, where the remainder of her girlhood was spent.
On Jan. 29, 1844, she was united in marriage to James D. Houlette. That fall they moved to Ohio, which was their home for a couple of years, and then moved to Manard county, Ill. In 1867, they came to Madison county, Iowa, and settled near Truro. Twelve years after, they moved to their home near Hanley, where the remainder of their lives was spent.
Seven children blessed their union. They are: Margaret Sticker of Payette, Idaho, Susan Schmuck of Des Moines, Robert S. Houlette, James C. Houlette, Louis S. Houlette of Kansas City, William P. Houlette of Hanley, and Stephen E. Houlette of Des Moines. All of these survive her except James G., who died February 9th of this year. There are also one brother, three sisters, 23 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren to mourn her loss.
A little more than two years ago, her husband was called to his heavenly home and she has since been patiently waiting for the Lord’s time to call that she might join those gone on before. When quite young, she acknowledged Christ as her Lord and Master, and her life was one of her ---- to Him. For many years, she has been a member of the M.E. church at Hanley. She was a loving mother and a true and thoughtful neighbor, and surely all of Madison county will feel the loss of a kind friend in the death of Grandma Houlette.
