The death of Mr. Lippincott removes one of our oldest citizens, and his loss will be sincerely mourned by many. He was an upright, law-abiding citizen and labored earnestly for the uplifting of his fellow-men. The bereaved family have the heart felt sympathy of the entire community.

Josiah Wilkins Lippincott was born in Burlington County, New Jersey, March 13th, 1829; departed this life February 12th, 1903, aged 73 years, 9 months and 29 days.

In 1850, the subject of this sketch was married, at Medford, New Jersey, to Elizabeth Hoover. To this union there were born nine children, five of these having preceded the father, four remaining with the bereaved wife to mourn the departure of a true husband and kind father. The children living are all residing in Iowa.

In the year 1850 the departed moved to Wainsville, Warren county, Ohio, remaining there a few years, in 1854 he became a resident of Lee County, Iowa.

From this place he removed with his family to Pike County, MO, in 1856. The climate in this section not being conducive to his health it became necessary to seek another location. He then settled in Lee County, Illinois, in the year 1861. In seeking better opportunities to serve his family, he moved to Earlham, Iowa about 1870, at which place he has resided with the exception of a few years.

On the 14th day of May 1865, he enlisted in the civil war in 144th Illinois regiment of infantry and received an honorable discharge, due to the closing of war, on July 11, 1865. This manifested love for his country was ever prominent in his thoughts which has been evidenced in his loyalty to the same and his desire to see he laws maintained.

In 1863, he became identified with the M.E. Church, have united with it in Sublet, Illinois, and has since maintained an active place in the church. There were privileges accorded him many times by the church in giving him a place on her officiary. He has been class leader, trustee, Sunday school superintendent, and did some of the work of a local preacher, although not a licentiate.
