C. L. Holmes died at his home in Winterset, Iowa, Dec. 1, 1901, at 11 o'clock a.m. of heart failure, C. L. Holmes, aged 39 years 10 months and 3 days. Mr. Holmes was born on his father's farm just south of Truro and has practically lived all his life among us. His remains were brought to Truro on Tuesday where his funeral was held at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Burnham, of the Christian church and attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends.

He leaves a wife, son, 2 step daughters, father, 2 sisters and 3 brothers to mourn his untimely death. He was an honored member of 3 lodges at Truro, namely; the K. P., the Eastern Star and A.F.& A.M. His remains were laid to rest in the Hartman cemetery, under the direction of the Masonic order, assisted by a large number of the Masons from Winterset, St. Charles and Peru. The Eastern Star members also attended ina body. His near relatives all attended the funeral, except his brother James W. Holmes.

Curt Holmes, the proprietor of the east side restaurant dropped dead from heart failure Sunday forenoon while sitting in a chair in his restaurant. Deceased was a son of Arch Holmes of Truro and a brother of “Ducky” Holmes, of nation baseball fame.

He was a giant in stature and could lift an ordinary water pail by grasping the top and bottom with the thumb and fingers of the same hand. When about 18 years old he received a spinal injury from engaging in a feat of strength known as pulling at “square hold.” He could at that time lift any two men with ease in this kind of contest. He was a kind hearted, well dispositioned man and had many friends here during his short residence.

A wife, a son, a step daughter are left to mourn his death. Funeral services were held at Truro on Tuesday from the M.E. church the Masonic order having the last sad rites.

Truro

The sad news of the death of Curtis Holmes reached us Sunday morning by telephone. Curt was well known here as he was a resident of this community from birth until the last few months.

Word was received over the telephone Sunday of the sudden death of L. C. Holmes. His remains were brought overland Tuesday, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Burnham at the M.E. church. The Masons took charge of the burial services. He was laid to rest in the Hartman cemetery by the side of his mother, two sisters and one brother.

A SUDDEN DEATH

Curtis Holmes Dropped Dead in his Place of Business Sunday Morning at 8:30

Last Sunday morning “Curt” Holmes, the proprietor of the Ideal Restaurant on the east side of the square dropped dead in his place of business. He was apparently in good health and had been working about the restaurant all morning. He had just gotten through carrying water from the court house well and had started from the back of the restaurant where he had been working, for the front of the store. When he reached the middle of the room without a moments warning he fell to the floor and died almost instantly.

Curtis Holmes was born in Madison county, Ia., January 27, 1862 and died December 1, 1901.

The funeral services were held Tuesday at Truro, Ia., conducted by Rev. Burman. He leaves a wife, three children and several brothers to mourn his loss, which have the sympathy of the entire community.

Death of Curtis Holmes

Died on last Sunday at 11 o’clock, Curtis Holmes, born in Ohio township, Madison county, Iowa, January 27, 1862, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Holmes. Mr.

Holmes lived in Madison county almost all his life, marrying Alice Fleck, who was also born in Madison county. He recently moved to Winterset from Truro and was engaged in the restaurant business on the east side.

The funeral occurred in Truro at the Methodist church, the Masons having charge of it.
