Mary E. Hults Burd, was born April 21, 1836, in Ohio, and departed this life peacefully December 10, 1925, aged 89 years, 7 months and 19 days.

On September 6th 1853, at Defiance Ohio she was united in marriage to Simeon S. Burd who died May 7th, 1901. To this union were born twelve children, six of whom are living. Miron of Ulysses, Kansas, Ida Poffenberger of Winterset, Ira L., of Mantorville, Minnesota, Henry of Winterset, May Dilley of Los Angeles, and Wynt of Monte Vista, Colorado. Preceded their mother in death were George W., Willard R., Burt, Lester, Cora and Millie. Besides her children there remain 26 grandchildren, a number of great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild to mourn their loss.

In the spring of 1865, the family moved from Menard County, Illinois to Madison county, Iowa, and settled on a farm in Douglas township, where they lived until 1885, when they moved to Winterset. After the death of her husband, she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. G. W. Poffenbarger until January of this year when she was taken to the home of Mrs. J. W. Hoyt, (Jessie, daughter of Ida, C.B.) who very tenderly cared for her.

She united with the Methodist church in childhood and on January 8, 1886 transferred her membership to the Church of Christ at Winterset and was a faithful attendant as long as her health would permit. Grandmother Burd, as she was known by her many friends, was indeed a true Christian and her Bible was her daily source of strength.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church, Saturday at 2:00 P.M. conducted by Rev. F. C. McCallon, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Winterset cemetery.
