A Sad Death

Mr. Simeon Burd died at the poor farm Tuesday evening at an advanced age. There is something pathetic in his history. Not very many years ago he was a wealthy farmer in Walnut township, and one of the heavy tax payers of Madison county. Through dividing property with his children, and indorsing paper he had to pay, he lost all his property, and ---the hardest blow of all—his wife was drawn away from him, leaving him not only penniless, but heartbroken over his wrongs.

The writer, who knew him in his prosperous days, had a conversation with him a little over a year ago, after he had taken up his abode at the poor farm, and at that time Mr. Burd predicted his speedy death, and added, “God knows I don’t care how soon.”

He was formerly a local preacher and a man of much influence. Yet in all his distress he cursed neither God nor man. He has found rest, and it is better so. Peace to his memory.

Simeon Burd, one of the old residents of the county, died at the poor farm, Tuesday, the funeral occurring at the home of his son-in-law, George Poffinbarger, Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Burd was once quite well to do owning a fine farm in Walnut township but has been in poor circumstances the past few years.

He was once an active minister of the gospel. During late years he became unmanageable and refused assistance from anyone preferring to go to the poor farm though Mr. Poffinbarger offered to take care of him.
