FATALLY SHOT

A letter received in this city Monday announces the probably fatal shooting of Capt. J.C. Snodgrass, a former resident of this city and a gentleman highly respected, at Winterset, this state, Saturday. Mr. Snodgrass was acting as city marshal and was shot by a drunken rough whom he was attempting to arrest. Two balls struck him, one in the arm, the other in the abdomen, and Mr. Doane, a former army comrade, writes that the attending physician pronounced the wounds as likely to result fatally.

Capt. Snodgrass lived in this county for many years. He was a soldier in Company I, 17th Iowa Infantry, enlisting as a private and coming out a captain. He is a brother-in-law of B. F. and James D. Crail.
