ST. CHARLES

Two aged pioneers and citizens of St. Charles died within one week, Mr. J. L. Armstrong the veteran hotel man, and Rev. W. W. Williams. Both were members of the ‘42 club which were composed of men living in and near St. Charles who were born in 1842. Until a few years ago they met annually and gave a banquet and program.

J. L. Armstrong was born near Zanesville, O., February 14, 1842, and died in St. Charles May 30, 1919.

They moved to Indiana in 1862 and was married to Margaret James in 1870. He came to Iowa in 1881 and for a while was station agent at Truro, Iowa coming to St. Charles in 1890 engaging in the hotel business where he has made a host of friends in and about St. Charles and with the traveling public.

He was a member of the M. E. church of St. Charles and also a mem(ber) of Model Lodge No. 315 A. F. & A. M., St. Charles, of which he was past master; also a member of Model Chapter No. 174 O. E. S. and a past worthy patron of that order.

He leaves to mourn his death, his widow and son, Earl J. of Ismay, Montana, and daughter, Grace, wife of E. E. Williams, of St. Charles and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. N. A. Orcutt of Valley Junction, a former pastor assisted by Rev. W. L. Allen and was buried in the St. Charles cemetery June 1st, 1919.
