GARY SWANSON, DAWSON, IOWA

Gary Swanson, age 74, of Dawson, Iowa, died on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 20, at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Perry. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 19, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. at Carris Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. Memorials may be given to family and may be left at the funeral home.

Gary Lee Swanson was born on Jan. 5, 1941, at Lake City, Iowa, to Eugene Martin and Miriam Ellen (Pankey) Swanson. He graduated from Adel High School in 1959. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth McAllister on Oct. 28, 1961, at Ogden, Iowa. Gary worked at Oscar Mayer for 26 years then went to work for Mercy Medical Center for 14 years as a truck driver and lastly he worked at Stew Hansen’s car dealership for 5 years, retiring at the age of 62.

Gary was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perry, CB Channel Jammers club in Perry, Moose Lodge and Union member of AMC & BW of North America, where he served as Vice President and Steward. Gary loved sports; he played baseball and basketball in Dana, Iowa, before moving to Adel and played football. He carried his love for sports over to coaching Little League softball and baseball in Perry, watching his children, grandchildren and great grandson play sports. He also liked watching races at the Boone Speedway, Chicago Bears and Cubs, the Iowa Hawkeye’s and enjoyed going to sporting events at Woodward Academy for several years. Gary enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, traveling, genealogy and taking care of his yard.

Gary was preceded in death by son, Scott Alan Swanson; father, Eugene Swanson; and a brother, Dean LeRoy Swanson.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Swanson of Dawson; mother, Miriam Swanson of Adel; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Noring of Perry and Denise Rachele Mitchell of Perry; son, Garry Dan (Robyn) Swanson of Winterset; sisters, Sharon (Robert) Spring of Des Moines and Donna (John) Simpson of Adel; grandchildren, Jessica (Daniel Richardson) Noring, Cory (Tina) Noring, Tia Noring, Michael Schmitz, Brittany Schmitz, JoLisa (Dustin Durham) Mitchell, Dakota Swanson and Wyatt Swanson; and a great-grandson, Eduardo William Becerra-Santana.
